» Things Move
Some things are hard to forget, no matter how defiantly you try. They shape your life. They change you. And they remember you. Here, I explore that concept by mixing fantasy and reality, weaving some bittersweet truths into a bitter, thrilling account of two very wacky worlds.
» Scattered or Broken
A child suffers from a loss; an adult comes to grips with the effects. This was my way of exploring a wide variety of themes in one short story. The tale is told in first person, with the narrator chronicling his past, examining himself and the world around him.
» Waxing Honorable
Agnes Jones is enraged when Bill Bringham claims to have duplicated the famous John Milton's candles. The people of Bittleton are all too happy at the idea, but Agnes thinks they're going against beloved Milton's memory. Can she get Bill to listen?
» The Rest of Us
Even those we look to for answers may spend their lives in search of, or hiding from, the truth. This story shows that no individual is completely separate from society. The narrator learns and accepts that forcing a smile or denying what's always there never amounts to satisfaction.
» Near the Apple Trees
There once was a boy named Albert, known only as "the boy" to those who never consciously thought of him. This vignette describes Albert's relationship with nature as well as his connection with and distance from those near him.
» Hello, I Am Not Caramel
Carlotta Jessica McSmith, short fourth-grade spelling bee master, is all too happy to share everything about herself with you. And why shouldn't she? Someday, she's positive, you'll be buying her books and reading about her medical accomplishments.
